John the Baptist Statue
The more then lifesize marble figures of Christ and St John the Baptist by Giuseppe Mazzuoli replaced an earlier paintng by
Matteo Perez d'Aleccio. Perez d'Alecco's Great Siege frieze in the Magisterial Palace is one of the most cherished treasures of Malta . The origional high
altar piece survives in the church museum. The terracotta colour and white marble chequer-board flour works perfectly with the overall scene and adds
excellent perspective to the presbytery. It was added at the intigation of Grand Master Perellos y Rocca full. The bronses in this area are well worth
close serutiny. Two coats of arms are of Grand Master Carafa and Perellos. The impresive marble arrived in Malta in the 6th year of the reign of the
aragonese Grand Master Rimondo Perellos y Roccaful

| The year was 1703 and 17 years would pass
before Mazzolli would be commissioned to produce the massive Perellos Monument. It has been said that the origional concept fo this piece was scetched by
th Maltese sculpture Melchiore Gafa (1635-1667). Gafa came to the most favourable notice of bernini and it is not inconceivable that Muzolli's piece is influenced
both by the sucsessfull berninni and by Gafa himself who died at the young age of 32 years. |
